Baba-Ahmed Announces Exit from Labour Party
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who served as the vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has declared his intention to leave the party. He made the announcement on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, during an appearance on Channels Television's program 'Politics Today'. According to The Cable, Baba-Ahmed will be joining the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
Baba-Ahmed was the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election. He had previously aligned with the Julius Abure faction of the Labour Party but refused to follow Obi to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Reasons for Leaving Labour Party
Baba-Ahmed cited internal conflicts within the Labour Party as the primary reason for his departure. He expressed that the party has strayed from its original principles. He stated: 'I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow (Wednesday). There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, was when they posted back. They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the antecedent of the individual to make life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today.' He further added, 'I am leaving the Labour Party (at) midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old.'
Criticism of APC Government
The Kaduna-born politician also criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for its handling of Nigeria's security situation. He accused the APC of attempting to establish a one-party state in Nigeria. Baba-Ahmed noted that the country has not made meaningful progress under the APC leadership, pointing to incidents such as the killing of senior officers as evidence of the government's failure in security matters.
Opposition Merger Plans Dismissed
Regarding the proposed merger of opposition parties to present a single candidate in the 2027 elections, Baba-Ahmed described such a plan as 'impossible.' However, he expressed support for a potential alliance involving ADC leaders Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. He suggested that if properly organized, such an alliance could become a strong force capable of challenging the APC.
Prophet Boma's Prophecy on Obi
In related news, Prophet Abel Boma prophesied that Peter Obi would not secure the ADC presidential ticket for the 2027 elections. Sharing the prophecy on his verified X account, Prophet Boma stated that 'instability' is not helping Obi.
