PDP members honour Adedibu's legacy in Ibadan

Supporters of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, led by its governorship candidate, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, have staged a procession across parts of Ibadan to commemorate the late strongman of Ibadan politics, Alhaji Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu.

Procession Route and Participants

The procession, which began at Gbolarumi’s residence in Bodija, moved through major parts of the city, including the State Secretariat, Bere and Oja’ba, before terminating at Adedibu’s Molete residence, where party members paid tribute to the late political leader. The event attracted PDP stakeholders, supporters and candidates seeking elective offices across the state’s 33 local government areas.

Tributes from Party Leaders

Addressing party members at the late politician’s residence, Gbolarumi described Adedibu as a mentor whose grassroots political strategies and commitment to party building continued to inspire many politicians within and outside Oyo State. According to him, the procession was organised to celebrate the enduring legacy of the late political leader and to promote the values of loyalty, mentorship and service associated with him. “We are here to honour a man whose contributions to grassroots politics remain significant. His approach to political mobilisation and mentorship continues to serve as a reference point for many of us,” he said.

The event also drew several prominent figures, including Senator Kola Balogun; Oloye Nureni Akanbi; Dr. Saka Balogun; Hon. Taiwo Akeem; Alhaji Rasaq Gbadegesin; former Deputy Chief of Staff to the late Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, and Alhaji Audu Lawal (Marafa), among others. Members of the Adedibu family were represented by Professor Abass Adedibu and the late politician’s widow, Bose Adedibu.

Call for Unity

Speaking during the event, Mrs. Adedibu urged members of the PDP to remain united ahead of future elections, stressing the need for reconciliation among party members. She described the PDP as a major force in Nigeria’s democratic journey and called on stakeholders to work together to strengthen the party. “Our strength lies in our unity. We must continue to work together as one family if we are to achieve our collective goals,” she said.

Also speaking, PDP chieftain, Hon. Opeyemi Fatola, dismissed speculations of internal divisions within the party, saying the large turnout at the event reflected the party’s cohesion and readiness for future political contests. He maintained that the PDP remained a formidable political platform in Oyo State and across the country.

Reflections on National Issues

The gathering also offered an opportunity for reflection on national issues, particularly insecurity. Gbolarumi expressed concern over rising cases of banditry, kidnappings and attacks on schools across the country, calling for sustained efforts to address the challenges. He also led prayers for victims of insecurity and their families.
