Abia APC Chairman Breaks Silence on 2031 Wait Claims, Vows Immediate Opposition

Chijioke Chukwu, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, has publicly rejected assertions that his party should postpone challenging the Labour Party (LP) administration until 2031 or later. In a statement issued on Saturday, March 7, 2026, Chukwu emphasized that the APC is ready to hold Governor Alex Otti's government accountable without delay, citing growing public skepticism over governance in the state.

Chukwu Accuses Otti Government of Deception and Financial Mismanagement

The former minority leader of the Abia State House of Assembly highlighted alleged inconsistencies in the LP administration's projects and expenditures. He pointed to claims about constructing over 200 smart schools at a cost of N54 billion, establishing a recreation and ICT centre that he says does not exist, and procurement expenses for a single vehicle reportedly at 150 billion naira, which he argued lack proper verification. Chukwu described these as examples of lies and deception that have prompted Abia residents to question the government's transparency.

APC Commits to Transparency and Credible Opposition in Abia

Chukwu reiterated the APC's dedication to promoting transparency, due process, and accountability in governance, qualities he alleges are absent under the current administration. He expressed confidence that the people of Abia will make informed decisions in future elections, with the APC positioning itself as a viable alternative focused on good governance. Additionally, he responded to congratulatory remarks from Onyebuchi Ememanka, director general of the Abia State Bureau of Strategic Communication, by affirming the party's role as a robust opposition force.

Chukwu Vows to Ensure Democratic Principles Under APC Leadership

Under his leadership, Chukwu stated that the APC aims to guarantee freedom of speech and effective opposition functioning, which he views as essential for democracy. He asserted that an APC-led government in Abia would prioritize inclusiveness and accountability, contrasting it with what he perceives as the current administration's shortcomings. This comes amid earlier reports encouraging Governor Otti to join the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, as mentioned by Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker of the House of Representatives.
