Political Conspiracy Shadows Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa's Progressive Administration

From the modest beginnings of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa's administration barely a year ago, residents of Ondo State have experienced significant relief as they are consistently immersed in the tangible dividends of democracy. However, similar to many youthful achievers, the shadow of conspiracy has persistently trailed this administration from its inception, continuing where his predecessor left off.

Historical Parallels and Internal Betrayals

Students of history and literature might recall the fate of Julius Caesar, the Roman stalwart who, after conquering the known world, was betrayed and murdered by elites who accused him of ruling like a colossus. As the Bible suggests, one's greatest enemies often emerge from within one's own circle. In Ondo State, the Cassius and Brutus figures in local politics are Aiyedatiwa's own neighbors and associates.

Despite the governor's diligent work, covert conspiracies operate behind the scenes, attempting to deprive him of due credit. These conspirators shield their avarice behind a facade of pseudo-loyalty and patronage, masking their true intentions with false smiles and feigned affection for the very kinsman they despise. Their clandestine meetings are carefully guarded to avoid detection, hidden beneath the shabby cloak of friendship.

Lessons from Past Political Sagas

These unfortunate political hatchet men are often prodigals lacking distinction, and those who encounter them are frequently struck by their unimpressive nature. Devoid of historical perspective and experience, they exhibit no hesitation in discarding valuable achievements along with shortcomings, as their cohorts demonstrated in 2007.

In that year's political saga, three individuals from Iju-Odo, the hometown of then-Governor Chief Olusegun Agagu, engaged in a bitter judicial confrontation that ultimately led to Agagu's removal from office. Karma, however, proved relentless. The three conspirators were subsequently denied any appointments under Governor Olusegun Mimiko's administration and lived in relative solitude thereafter.

What was Agagu's alleged offense? They accused him of establishing the Ondo State University of Science and Technology at Okitipupa, the major town in Ondo South Senatorial District, rather than in their own locality of Iju-Odo. Agagu explained that as a state institution, the university needed to be situated where all segments of the population could easily access it.

Current Political Challenges and Eligibility Questions

It is therefore shocking that certain political opportunists, disregarding both logic and tradition, have conspired with other ineffective politicians from various sections of the state to directly challenge Governor Aiyedatiwa's eligibility to contest the 2028 gubernatorial election.

Yoruba cultural exponent Chief Hubert Ogunde famously sang "Yoruba Ronu" (Yoruba, Think) during the political turmoil in Nigeria's Western Region, a period incidentally sparked by similar backstabbing. Those were days when the region echoed with venomous vituperations and hair-raising curses.

Even if Aiyedatiwa were to leave office by 2029, would he necessarily be replaced by an Ikale man? The answer is no. The governorship succession in Ondo State traditionally rotates elegantly to the Ondo Central Senatorial Zone next.

Aiyedatiwa's Progressive Vision and Achievements

Critics, as the saying goes, are often legless men attempting to teach running. These political jobbers lack substantial ideas comparable to the public-minded vision of Governor Aiyedatiwa. He is a leader who has absorbed lessons from the legacies of both Chief Obafemi Awolowo and President Bola Tinubu, serving his people with the intensity of someone who believes meaningful development doesn't require decades in office.

The primary concern of reasonable Ondo State citizens should be how the state can achieve comprehensive development in education, technology, and healthcare. Ondo should be competing vigorously with neighboring Ogun State across multiple fronts, particularly in supporting indigenes, encouraging successful natives to engage in backward integration by establishing businesses within the state, constructing more health facilities, and attracting foreign investors.

Tangible Development Projects and Investment Initiatives

Interestingly, these exact progressive policies and programs characterize the Aiyedatiwa administration since assuming office. Residents have witnessed how the governor is actively engaging foreign investors to embark on massive investments, including a refinery and petrochemical industry that, upon completion, will stand as the largest in Africa.

Yet, due to their self-centered motivations, these conspirators deliberately ignore these substantial development strides. Governor Aiyedatiwa has not formally declared his intention to contest the 2028 governorship election, and if he does eventually signal such ambition, time will reveal the outcome. His potential second term could represent the icing on the cake, promising improved quality of life for all citizens.

Call for Unity and Developmental Focus

For now, all hands must be on deck to address critical issues: creating employment for thousands of graduates emerging from universities and polytechnics, constructing more quality roads, and systematically improving citizens' daily lives.

We must unite to silence the war drums being beaten by frustrated political opportunists who currently fan the embers of parochialism and vendetta. Let Ondo State grow, and let us embrace politics with maturity and without bitterness. The late Ibrahim Waziri championed the principle of "politics without bitterness" throughout his life until his passing.

Appeal for Political Sanity and Administrative Focus

In more politically mature environments, once elections conclude, everyone retreats until the next electoral cycle, avoiding unnecessary interference and nuisance creation. We must encourage Governor Aiyedatiwa to maintain focus on the developmental growth he envisions for Ondo State, resisting the distractions that charlatans and ineffective politicians are attempting to engineer.

The governor's commitment to attracting major investments, improving infrastructure, and enhancing social services demonstrates a clear development trajectory that deserves support rather than subterfuge. As the administration continues to deliver democratic dividends, the political conspirators' efforts appear increasingly disconnected from the populace's genuine needs and aspirations.
