Ex-Minister Gwarzo Declares Candidacy for Kano North Senatorial Seat
Abdullahi Tijjani Mohammed Gwarzo, the former Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, has officially announced his intention to contest the Kano North Senatorial seat in the upcoming general election. Gwarzo, a foundation member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former deputy governor, made this declaration while addressing hundreds of APC supporters on Friday, vowing to end the nine-year uninterrupted tenure of Deputy Senate President Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
Experience and Vision for Development
Gwarzo emphasized his extensive political experience, having served as council chairman, deputy governor, and minister, positioning himself as the alternative candidate to represent Kano North at the National Assembly. He highlighted his past achievements, including facilitating critical human and infrastructural development projects, rural and urban electrification, and the establishment of vocational centers during his tenure as Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government.
In his address, Gwarzo stated, "Today, I am the most experienced person to contest the Senate seat, which will benefit my people and the state. Despite current challenges, we created a vocational center training for hundreds of youths with a N5000 monthly incentive." He plans to expand this initiative across all 18 local governments in the Kano Senatorial District, aiming to curb thuggery and other social vices through skills development.
Support for National Initiatives
The former deputy governor commended President Bola Tinubu for his leadership under the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly praising the establishment of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, which he said opens opportunities for young Nigerians. Gwarzo also noted ongoing infrastructure projects such as the Kano-Kaduna-Abuja Highways, AKK gas pipelines, and rail lines connecting Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Katsina, and Maradi, highlighting their economic promise for Northern Nigeria.
Reflecting on his ministerial role from 2023 to 2024, Gwarzo mentioned his contributions to the initiation of Renewed Hope Cities and Estates, the review of housing and urban development laws, and facilitating presidential interventions that benefited the people of Kano.
Political Endorsements and Local Dynamics
During the event, Muntari Isha Yakasai, a former commissioner and local government chairman, advised Governor Abba Yusuf to consider Murtala Sule Garo as his deputy, assuring that Garo's inclusion would enhance security and stability in Kano. This endorsement adds to the political backdrop as Gwarzo prepares for a competitive race against the incumbent Deputy Senate President.
Gwarzo's entry into the senatorial race signals a significant challenge within the APC, with his focus on grassroots development and experience likely to resonate with voters seeking change in Kano North.
