All 1,600 pilgrims from Lagos State who took part in the 2026 Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia have safely returned to Nigeria, reuniting with their families. The final group of 187 pilgrims arrived on Saturday, bringing the state's Hajj operations to a successful close.
Successful and Well-Coordinated Pilgrimage
Speaking at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, the Amir-ul-Hajj and Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ibrahim Layode, described the pilgrimage as a success, attributing it to the pilgrims' good conduct and early preparations by the state government and stakeholders.
"We give all glory to Almighty God for the successful completion of this year's Hajj exercise. It was a success achieved through teamwork and a shared sense of purpose," Layode said. He noted that despite strict deadlines set by Saudi authorities for early payments and documentation, early preparations made the operation easier, including comprehensive health checks, orientation programs, and welfare packages.
Layode commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Hamzat for their support, which he said significantly contributed to the exercise's success.
Operational Template and Future Plans
Dr. Abdullahi Jebe, Special Adviser to the Governor on Islamic Matters and Chairman of the 2026 Hajj Ad-hoc Committee, stated that Lagos State has developed a reliable operational template that has guided its Hajj management for years. "We have experienced professionals and a tested framework that consistently works. Lagos is not a test-run ground; we have the manpower and capacity to deliver," he said.
Jebe added that the state is prepared to accommodate over 3,000 pilgrims in future Hajj exercises. "Lagos is known for excellence. We have done well again this year, and we are determined to improve further," he said.
He acknowledged challenges with early payment deadlines imposed by Saudi authorities but noted that Governor Sanwo-Olu provided financial support to meet the deadlines, with pilgrims later refunding the money. He expressed confidence that similar challenges would not affect future operations.
Coordination and Pilgrim Satisfaction
The Secretary of the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, AbdulHakeem Ajomagberin, praised the coordination among officials, saying it contributed to the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. He added that the board would intensify enlightenment campaigns on early payment and documentation.
Returning pilgrims expressed satisfaction with the exercise, commending Governor Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Hamzat, the Amir-ul-Hajj, and other officials for prioritizing their welfare throughout the spiritual journey.
