The Nigerian Army has renovated and commissioned the Headquarters of the 81 Battalion and the official residence of its Commanding Officer at Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola Barracks, Ibadan, in a renewed push to enhance troop welfare and operational efficiency.
GOC Commends Renovation as Strategic Investment
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, said the projects reflect the Army's sustained commitment to improving the working and living conditions of personnel across its formations. He explained that the initiative aligns with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, particularly the “Soldiers First” policy, which prioritises the welfare of troops and their families as a key driver of operational effectiveness.
According to him, improved infrastructure remains central to boosting morale, discipline and combat readiness within the military. “The projects commissioned today are not merely structural upgrades. They are strategic investments in the operational effectiveness, combat readiness and long-term efficiency of the battalion,” Nnebeife said. He noted that while the renovated battalion headquarters would enhance administrative and command operations, the upgraded official residence would significantly improve the welfare and comfort of the Commanding Officer and his family.
GOC Urges Maintenance, Praises Outgoing CO
The GOC lauded the Chief of Army Staff for sustaining welfare-driven interventions across Army formations nationwide, urging personnel to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities to guarantee long-term value. He also praised the outgoing Commanding Officer of the 81 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Agaku, for initiating and completing the projects, describing him as a committed and professional officer whose leadership should be emulated.
Outgoing CO Details Renovation Scope
Earlier, Agaku said the renovation became necessary following an assessment of facilities after he assumed command on February 7, 2025, noting that the condition of infrastructure required urgent rehabilitation to improve efficiency and welfare. He explained that the project covered extensive upgrades, including reroofing, electrical and plumbing works, office reconfiguration, installation of modern fittings, tiling, painting and environmental improvements.
“This project was not just about renovating buildings; it was about restoring pride, boosting morale and creating an atmosphere where personnel can effectively carry out their duties,” he said. Agaku added that work commenced on February 17, 2025, and was completed on May 15, 2026, following strict supervision and quality control measures.
Facilities Upgraded: Offices, Conference Room, Car Park
The renovated battalion headquarters now features 12 offices, a conference room, improved workspaces, air conditioners, refrigerators, modern fittings and a newly constructed car park. Also, the Commanding Officer's residence was upgraded with enhanced security, perimeter fencing, gatehouse, paved driveways, guest facilities and other modern amenities.
Project Supervisor Highlights Prudent Management
The project supervisor and Adjutant of 81 Battalion, Captain Femi Ajia, said the renovation was executed through careful planning, close supervision and prudent resource management, stressing that it reflects the Army's commitment to operational efficiency and troop welfare.
