Tragedy struck in Rivers State on Wednesday as two female students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and a commercial motorcyclist lost their lives in a road accident along Choba Bridge on the East–West Road in Port Harcourt.
The victims were returning from their examination centre when the motorcycles conveying the students reportedly collided with a moving truck, according to eyewitness accounts.
Details of the Incident
The students had just completed their WAEC examinations at Odoha Community Secondary School in Emohua Local Government Area and were heading home when the crash occurred. A source stated, "The students were coming back from Odoha Community Secondary School, Emohua LGA of Rivers after writing the WAEC exams. It happened today. Three people died: one okada rider and two WAEC female students."
Another witness noted that the exam centre was located approximately 30 minutes from the accident scene near Choba Bridge, a busy route in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, which is home to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT). "Choba is the host community to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT)," the source added.
Injuries and Response
Several other passengers were reportedly injured in the crash and were rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for medical treatment. Operatives from the Choba Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to the scene to restore order and manage traffic.
A video shared on X showed the victims lying on the road after the collision. As of press time, the Rivers State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
