Victor Osimhen continues to dominate a key UEFA Champions League statistic despite Galatasaray's elimination in the Round of 16. The Turkish Super League champions were knocked out after a 4-1 aggregate defeat to English Premier League winners Liverpool.
Osimhen's Impactful Champions League Campaign
According to data from Transfermarkt, Galatasaray played 12 matches in this season's Champions League, including the knockout playoff against Juventus, before their exit. Osimhen's contributions were pivotal throughout the campaign, which was unfortunately cut short by an injury.
The campaign began with a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, a match Osimhen missed due to a muscle injury sustained while on international duty with Nigeria. Galatasaray then won their next three matches, with Osimhen scoring crucial goals: the only goal in a 1-0 win over Liverpool, two goals in a 3-1 victory against Bodo/Glimt, and a hat-trick in a 3-0 triumph over Ajax.
Osimhen missed the subsequent match against Royal Union Saint Gilloise, which Galatasaray lost. He returned for the Monaco game but could not prevent a 1-0 defeat. Despite failing to make an attacking contribution in a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid and a 2-0 loss to Manchester City, Galatasaray advanced to the knockout stage.
In the playoff against Juventus, Osimhen provided two assists in a stunning 5-2 first-leg victory and scored the goal that sparked a comeback in a 3-2 second-leg loss. He also assisted Mario Lemina's winning goal in a 1-0 first-leg win over Liverpool. However, he fractured his arm early in the second leg, and Galatasaray were defeated 4-0.
Leading the Man of the Match Stats
According to official UEFA data, Osimhen has earned the most man-of-the-match awards in this season's Champions League, with four accolades. He won three consecutive awards in his first matches against Liverpool, Bodo/Glimt, and Ajax, before securing his fourth during the 3-2 loss to Juventus.
Seven players have three awards each: Declan Rice, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, Anthony Gordon, Charles De Ketelaere, Francisco Trincao, and Jens Hauge. Only Arsenal's Rice could tie Osimhen if he wins the man of the match award in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
The 2026 final is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.
