A former Paris Saint-Germain manager has tipped an African nation to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Alain Giresse, the 73-year-old former coach of PSG, Tunisia, and Gabon, believes Senegal has what it takes to make a deep run in the tournament.
Giresse Backs Senegal for Semi-final Berth
According to reports from Seneweb, Giresse is confident that the Teranga Lions possess the quality and depth to compete with the world's best teams. He pointed to the current generation of Senegalese players, suggesting they could surpass the achievements of the celebrated 2002 squad that reached the quarter-finals. Giresse stated: “Senegal has the potential to reach at least the semi-finals. Of course, we know that there can be unforeseen events and situations during matches, but intrinsically, the potential is there.”
The former France international also mentioned four other African teams that could surprise at the World Cup: Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He noted that African football has evolved significantly and can now compete with European and South American powerhouses. Giresse added: “We see that African teams are increasingly displaying a level that is approaching the top and best world rankings. As you said, it was Morocco that reached the semi-finals in the last edition in Qatar.”
African Teams No Longer Pushovers – Shehu
Nigerian sports journalist Abdullahi Shehu shares Giresse's optimism. In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Shehu emphasized that African teams are no longer underestimated. He said: “No nation can afford to look down on African teams because the continent boasts some of the best players in the world. From Morocco to Senegal, Ghana and DR Congo, you will find players who are regular starters for their respective clubs.” Shehu predicts that at least two African teams will reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
The 2026 World Cup has already delivered exciting results, with co-hosts Mexico defeating South Africa in the opening match. Canada played out a draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the United States cruised to a 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Later tonight, Africa's second representative, Morocco, will face world champions Brazil in a Group C clash at MetLife Stadium, as reported by ESPN.
Ten African nations are participating in the expanded World Cup for the first time, marking a historic moment for the continent. The tournament promises to showcase the growth of African football on the global stage.
