Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN), Maradi, has officially matriculated 430 students for the 2025/2026 academic session. This new intake marks another milestone for the institution, which continues to expand its undergraduate programmes across a wide range of disciplines.

Institution's Background and Mission

Founded in 2013, MAAUN is recognized as one of the first bilingual universities in Sub-Saharan Africa. It offers academic programmes in both English and French, with a strong emphasis on science, humanities, research, and innovation. The university aims to provide a diverse and inclusive learning environment that prepares students for global challenges.

Matriculation Ceremony Highlights

During the ceremony, the Director of the Maradi campus, Shu'aibu Usman-Tanko, addressed the new students, reminding them of the academic and ethical standards expected at the university. He described matriculation as a formal confirmation that students are academically qualified, emotionally stable, and ready to face the rigorous demands of university education.

Some of the newly admitted students shared their views, describing the university as a platform for personal growth and international exposure. They pointed to the success of MAAUN graduates, particularly in the health sciences, with many alumni now working abroad. One student noted that the institution is “breaking barriers and paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse learning environment.”

Expansion and Infrastructure Development

MAAUN continues to expand its footprint in the region, with affiliated institutions including MAAUN Kano, Franco-British International University, and Canadian University of Nigeria. Officials disclosed that construction is ongoing at the permanent site in Djiratawa, Maradi, where a major campus development project is underway. This reflects continued investment in infrastructure and capacity building.

Recognition and Rankings

The university's growing role in higher education across West Africa is underscored by its recent achievements. In January 2026, Maryam Abacha American University of Niger was ranked as the number one university in the Niger Republic by the AD Scientific Index, surpassing all public and private institutions in the country. This recognition highlights the institution's commitment to academic excellence and research.

The latest matriculation further solidifies MAAUN's position as a leading bilingual university, attracting students from diverse backgrounds and contributing to the development of higher education in the region.
