The Cross River State Government has praised journalists in the state for their dedication to responsible and ethical journalism, emphasizing that the state continues to benefit from balanced reporting that addresses governance issues with fairness and objectivity.
Commissioner Commends Media's Role
State Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, delivered the commendation during an inspection of the newly installed 150 KVA solar power system at the NUJ Press Centre in Calabar on Monday. The system was provided by the state government to support media operations.
Dr Ekpang noted that the media's comprehensive coverage of developmental projects in Cross River, particularly during the election period, demonstrates the press's commitment to its constitutional role as a societal watchdog. He attributed the positive relationship between the government and the media to the administration's policy of transparency, regular access to information, and mutual respect for journalistic duties.
Leadership and Innovation Recognized
The Commissioner praised the state chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Archibong Bassey, for her pragmatic leadership and innovative initiatives at the Press Centre. He described her efforts as unprecedented and a significant step toward strengthening professional capacity in line with international standards. Dr Ekpang urged journalists to continuously upgrade their skills to keep pace with evolving media trends.
He reaffirmed the Cross River State Government's commitment to transparency, accountability, and open communication with the media, stressing that an informed citizenry is essential for effective governance. He assured that the government would continue to prioritize journalists' welfare and create a conducive environment for productive work.
NUJ Chairman Expresses Gratitude
Comrade Archibong Bassey, the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council, thanked the government for the gesture, noting that the solar power system would ensure uninterrupted electricity at the press centre and enhance journalism practice in the state. She reiterated journalists' commitment to highlighting government activities, programs, and projects to help achieve its goals.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a letter of appreciation from the council chairman to the governor for the initiative.
