Expert Urges Journalists on Inclusive, Developmental Reporting

The Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of News Central, Kayode Akintemi, has called on journalists to adopt inclusive reporting and developmental journalism. Speaking during a courtesy visit to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang in Jos, Akintemi emphasized the need to tell stories of the underserved.

Amplifying Unheard Voices

Akintemi stated, "News Central has chosen a path of reporting stories that matter and has also decided to focus on developmental journalism. We are working assiduously to ensure that Nigerians who are often unheard are given a voice, so that Nigeria and Africa will be the better for it. We have come to Jos, Plateau state, to amplify the voices of the people and the Middle Belt that have suffered fatal losses and experienced trauma that normally nations at war may not even see."

He stressed that journalists must go beyond conventional news to highlight issues affecting marginalized communities, particularly those in conflict-prone regions.

Governor Mutfwang's Response

In his response, Governor Mutfwang noted that the time has come to disaggregate different tendencies within the country, adding that narratives must change. He said, "I want to tell you that the homogeneous communities of the Middle Belt have quietly decided that in 2027, they will take their destinies into their hands, and many people will not be comfortable with it, particularly the political elite."

The governor did not shy away from broader political themes, dismissing opposition critiques and emphasizing that the issues are more complex than often ascribed. He described the attacks in areas like Mangu, Bokkos, and Bikini Ladi as pure acts of terrorism and promised to put an end to terrorism in the state.

Commitment to Developmental Journalism

The visit underscores the growing emphasis on developmental journalism in Nigeria. Akintemi's call for inclusive reporting aligns with global best practices, encouraging media houses to prioritize stories that drive social change and give voice to the voiceless.

Governor Mutfwang's administration has faced significant security challenges, and his commitment to addressing terrorism in Plateau State was a key theme of the meeting. The governor reiterated his dedication to restoring peace and stability, urging journalists to play a constructive role in shaping public discourse.

The News Central team, including Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, and Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, also participated in the discussions. The meeting highlighted the potential for media-government collaboration in promoting developmental agendas.
