The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with faith-based organisations as part of efforts to enhance national security, promote peaceful coexistence, and drive sustainable development across the country. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stated this in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, led by Most Reverend Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, during a courtesy visit to his office.
Progress and Inclusive Governance
Tunji-Ojo said Nigeria had recorded remarkable progress over the years, noting that the country had advanced significantly compared to four decades ago. He added that the present administration remained focused on nation-building through inclusive governance, strategic reforms, and strengthened internal security. According to the Minister, collaboration with religious institutions was crucial to fostering peace, national unity, and social cohesion, stressing that sustainable national development cannot be achieved without the active participation of key stakeholders.
Deepening Cooperation
He explained that discussions during the meeting centred on deepening cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in areas of mutual interest, including national security, social cohesion, good governance, and initiatives aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence. The meeting highlighted the importance of joint efforts in addressing national challenges.
Commendation and Commitment
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Bishop Kukah commended the administration for its responsiveness to issues affecting the Catholic Church and praised the Ministry of Interior for maintaining an open-door policy and engaging constructively with religious bodies. The Cleric reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to partnering with the Federal Government to promote national security, support sound public policies, and advance initiatives that strengthen peace, justice, unity, and national development.
Call for Sustained Engagement
The Minister, in his closing remarks, reiterated the Federal Government’s readiness to sustain meaningful engagement with faith-based organisations and other critical stakeholders in advancing the country’s development agenda. This reaffirmation underscores the administration's dedication to inclusive governance and collaborative security strategies.
