INEC Confirms Kwankwaso as NDC Vice Presidential Candidate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially uploaded the name of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on its portal as the vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 presidential election. This was confirmed by the NDC in a statement released on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, agreed to run as the running mate to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in May 2026. The duo is seeking to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming election.

Strategic Meeting with NDC Leader Seriake Dickson

According to the NDC, its national leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, visited Kwankwaso at his residence in Abuja on Tuesday for strategic discussions. The meeting focused on preparations for the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso briefed Dickson on his engagements and consultations across the northwestern states, which, according to the former New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) chieftain, have yielded very encouraging results. In a post on his verified Facebook page, Kwankwaso wrote: "We remain steadfast, united, and fully focused on the mission ahead."

Full Statement from NDC

The NDC's statement read: "The National Leader of the NDC, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, today visited and held strategic discussions with our Vice Presidential Candidate, His Excellency Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, CON. We are pleased to confirm that Senator Kwankwaso’s name has been successfully uploaded on the INEC portal as the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC for the 2027 Presidential Election. The party remains focused and committed to the task ahead."

Obidient Movement Reassures Supporters

Meanwhile, the Obidient Movement has assured supporters that Obi and Kwankwaso will be on the ballot in 2027. Yunusa Tanko, the national coordinator of the movement, gave this assurance at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, June 29, 2026. He dismissed fears that recent political and legal developments could derail the opposition coalition.

Tanko was reacting to a recent judgment by Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside the court’s December 10, 2025, verdict directing INEC to register the NDC as a political party. Tanko stated: "We want to reassure our supporters that the coalition is intact and growing stronger. Mr Peter Obi and Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso will be on the ballot in 2027. No amount of intimidation or legal manoeuvring can stop the will of the people."
