Peter Obi Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Rules Out Being Running Mate
Peter Obi: I Will Not Be Anyone's Running Mate in 2027

In a definitive statement concerning his political future, Peter Obi, the leader of the Obidient movement, has announced his intention to run for Nigeria's presidency again in the 2027 general elections. Crucially, the former Labour Party flagbearer has firmly ruled out the possibility of being anyone's vice-presidential candidate.

Obi's Firm Stance on Presidential Ambition

Peter Obi made his position clear during an X (formerly Twitter) Spaces conversation on the night of Sunday, December 28, 2025. Addressing questions about his plans, the former governor of Anambra State was unequivocal about his role in the upcoming electoral contest. He stated that he has not acquired his vast experience in governance and business only to settle for the position of Vice-President.

"I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be Vice President," Obi declared during the interactive session. He further asserted his capability, saying, "I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President."

Obi, who was the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 election and finished in third place, ended his remarks with a rallying call: "Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers."

Potential Defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC)

Amidst this declaration, strong indications suggest a significant shift in Peter Obi's party affiliation ahead of the 2027 polls. Reports indicate that Obi is set to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following extensive consultations.

According to a high-ranking ADC official in Abuja who spoke on Sunday, December 28, plans have been finalised for Obi to join the coalition party. The official revealed that a declaration rally is scheduled to take place in Enugu State, often regarded as the political capital of the South-East region, on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

"We are aware that Peter Obi is making plans to declare for the ADC on December 31 in Enugu. Although he has yet to formally inform the party, the plans are genuine," the source stated. Supporters and loyalists of the opposition leader are said to have already begun preparations for the defection event.

When contacted for confirmation, Bolaji Abdullahi, the national spokesperson for the ADC, maintained that no official announcement had been made. He acknowledged, however, that "consultations are ongoing."

Background and Recent Consultations

This development marks a potential new chapter for Obi, who was the running mate to Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 presidential election before going solo in 2023 under the Labour Party banner.

In related activities, Peter Obi recently paid a visit to former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida (retired), in Minna. Obi described the meeting, which took place as part of his continued "consultations in the national interest," as focusing on "the country's unity, security and improving the lives of our people."

This series of moves underscores Peter Obi's active preparation for the 2027 electoral battle, positioning himself firmly as a principal candidate and setting the stage for what promises to be a highly contested race.
