Atiku, Obi, Amaechi Meet at Ibadan Opposition Summit

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi are among prominent political figures who have assembled in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, for a national summit of opposition parties.

Other notable attendees include former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, former Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Senators Victor Umeh and Rabiu Kwankwaso, Professor Jerry Gana, and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, among many others. The summit is being hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, a leading member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Focus on Opposition Unity

The gathering is centered on enhancing collaboration among opposition parties ahead of future elections. Atiku Abubakar is widely believed to be among key figures eyeing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election.

Makinde's Call for Democratic Protection

In his opening remarks, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of safeguarding Nigeria's democracy. He urged all stakeholders to work collectively to deepen democratic values and ensure the country's political system remains robust and inclusive.

The summit is expected to produce a roadmap for opposition parties to present a united front in upcoming electoral contests, with discussions focusing on coalition-building, policy alignment, and strategies to challenge the ruling party effectively.
