Obafemi Hamzat Endorsed as Most Qualified for Lagos Governor in 2027
Hamzat Endorsed as Most Qualified for Lagos Governor 2027

A political support group in Lagos, the Renewed Hope Labourers Network, has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its preferred candidate for the 2027 Lagos governorship election.

Endorsement Announcement

The group announced the endorsement in a statement on Thursday, April 23, emphasizing that both leaders have demonstrated the capacity to sustain ongoing reforms at federal and state levels. John Folarin Odusote, Lagos coordinator of the group, said the decision followed consultations with members across the state and reflects a desire for continuity in governance.

Tinubu's Reforms Need Time

Odusote argued that President Tinubu’s economic reforms, infrastructure projects, and institutional changes require more time to yield long-term results. “We believe the ongoing reforms at the federal level require consistency and sustained political will to achieve their full benefits,” he said. He added that Tinubu has taken “difficult but necessary decisions” and that another term would help consolidate these policies.

Hamzat as Successor to Sanwo-Olu

The group also endorsed Hamzat as the ideal successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Odusote described Hamzat as a key figure in Lagos’ governance structure, citing his experience in public service and involvement in infrastructure and technology initiatives. “Lagos requires a leader who understands the challenges of managing a rapidly growing megacity and can build on existing progress,” he said.

Hamzat has played significant roles in digital governance reforms, urban development, and public service delivery in Lagos.

Recognition of Faleke

The group acknowledged Abiodun Faleke as its grand patron, noting that he has strengthened mobilisation efforts and encouraged support for leaders aligned with the vision of continuity and development.

Grassroots Mobilisation Plans

The Renewed Hope Labourers Network plans to begin grassroots mobilisation across Lagos to rally support for Tinubu and Hamzat ahead of the 2027 elections. The group said its endorsement reflects growing support for continuity in governance as Nigeria and Lagos tackle economic and infrastructure challenges.

In a related development, Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, stated that Hamzat is the “next governor of Lagos state.” Obasa, who has been rumored to have his own governorship ambition, said he had just returned from Abuja and suggested that his meeting with President Tinubu confirmed this direction. He hosted Hamzat at his residence in Agege on April 23 as part of consultations.
