The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed deep sadness over the constant insults directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the president as a leader of action rather than words. Umahi made the remarks on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, during the launch of the Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway project in Nasarawa State.
Umahi Champions Tinubu's Infrastructure Vision
Umahi praised Tinubu's unwavering commitment to infrastructure development across Nigeria, noting that the ongoing road projects are unprecedented in the country's history. He defended the Federal Government's adoption of reinforced concrete pavement technology for major highways, arguing that these roads are more durable and require less maintenance than conventional asphalt roads.
“I am so lucky to have a President who is infrastructure-driven, a man of few words, a man of courage, a man who has a lot of desire to take back our country,” Umahi said. “So, when people insult the President, I feel so sad because every day we are on the road. Every day, we are pushed by the President.”
Call for Electoral Support in 2027
The former Ebonyi State governor urged Nigerians to reciprocate the administration's efforts with electoral support in the 2027 elections. He highlighted the president's hands-on approach, citing upcoming flag-offs in Plateau State, Maiduguri, and Lagos to address flooding along the coastal highway.
“Tomorrow we will be in Plateau State to flag off another road. The next day, we are in Maiduguri for another flag-off. The next day we are going to Lagos to solve the problem of flooding along the coastal highway,” Umahi added.
Addressing Critics and National Debt Concerns
Umahi also addressed critics of Tinubu's borrowing strategy, urging support for infrastructure reforms despite the rising national debt. According to reports, the Tinubu administration has amassed between ₦57 trillion and ₦65.9 trillion in new public debt since assuming office in May 2023. Umahi praised the completion of the first section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road, noting its positive impact on commerce and security.
In a related development, Umahi recently signed President Tinubu's second-term nomination form, describing it as a “victory form” symbolising continuity in governance. He expressed confidence in Tinubu's leadership, emphasising that sustained support and policy continuity would further drive national development.
