Tinubu Announces Unique Digital Postcode for Nigerian Homes

President Bola Tinubu has announced that every Nigerian home will receive a unique digital postcode as part of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System. The initiative, which has already commenced, aims to create a smarter, more secure, and digitally enabled addressing system across the country.

Announcement and Implementation

Dada Olusegun, the special assistant to the president on social media, announced the development on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, July 3. He stated that the process has already begun and is part of the administration's commitment to reforming every aspect of Nigeria's economy to achieve the ambitious goal of creating a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

Olusegun expressed confidence that the system will improve service delivery, strengthen emergency response, and unlock new opportunities in all parts of the country. The presidency shared a video on X, which has since generated reactions from Nigerians.

Reactions from Nigerians

Many Nigerians have praised the initiative. Adeola commented, "Tinubu is the President who will lead Nigeria into the modern nation we have long hoped for. We've been living in the past for far too long. Now, we are beginning to live in the future." Yusuf Matallawa added, "A commendable step toward a smarter and more efficient Nigeria. Proper implementation will enhance service delivery, strengthen security, and create more opportunities for citizens."

Lucho expressed optimism: "A modern digital postcode system is a practical step toward improving governance, emergency response, and economic growth across Nigeria." Aisha Abdulkadir Yusuf described the development as a game-changer: "This digital postcode system will be a game-changer for Nigeria! The fact that it’s designed to boost everything from emergency response to economic opportunities makes sense that this kind of modernisation is a key part of President Tinubu's plan to hit that $1 trillion economy goal by 2030." Echue Dami Ogechi commended the move: "This is smart, this is commendable, this is progress, this will boost response swiftly. Good job! $1 trillion economy on the go!"

Broader Context

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about Nigeria's economic reforms. The presidency has also defended Tinubu against criticisms from Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the NDC, regarding the country's power-generating capacity. Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, responded that Obi was ignorant about Nigeria's electricity challenges, noting that the problem is not a shortage of gas.

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is expected to modernize Nigeria's addressing infrastructure, potentially benefiting e-commerce, logistics, and emergency services. The initiative aligns with the administration's broader digital transformation agenda.
