Akwa Ibom State Launches Major Crackdown on Illegal Scrap Dealers
Akwa Ibom Cracks Down on Illegal Scrap Dealers

The Akwa Ibom State Government has initiated a comprehensive statewide enforcement operation targeting unregistered scrap dealers and scavengers. The operation, led by the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), resulted in the closure of illegal businesses and the arrest of operators who violated environmental and public safety laws.

Enforcement Under New Law

Officials confirmed that the crackdown follows the implementation of the state's Waste Metal Scrap Law 2026. AKSEPWMA Chairman Obong Prince Ikim stated that the exercise aims to regulate the scrap sector, protect the environment, and prevent criminal elements from using waste collection and metal trading as a cover for illicit activities.

"If you want to do scrap business, you must register," Mr Ikim said during the operation in Uyo, the state capital. "Many people now hide under scrap trading to perpetrate nefarious activities." He warned that dump site operators and scrap dealers who fail to register with the government face closure and prosecution.

Criminal Activities Uncovered

Authorities accused some operators of involvement in vandalism of public infrastructure and indiscriminate waste disposal. Investigations have revealed criminal activities linked to several dump sites across the state. "Some people vandalise government facilities in the name of scrap business and encourage indiscriminate dumping of refuse," Mr Ikim added.

He emphasized that the state government and security agencies will continue efforts to enforce compliance and maintain public order. "The Commissioner of Police has zero tolerance for criminality, and the governor wants Akwa Ibom people to sleep with their eyes closed. We will fish out every defaulter," he said.

Police Collaboration

Police officials involved in the operation noted that investigations showed some criminal suspects used scrap yards and refuse dump sites as cover for illegal activities. CSP Okwuzulike Vincent of the Itam Police Station revealed that some suspects pretended to be mentally unstable while hiding ammunition and other suspicious items in makeshift shelters around dump locations. He praised the environmental agency for proactive efforts to sanitize the sector and pledged continued cooperation between law enforcement and the agency.

Offenders Dealt With

Officials stated that some first-time offenders arrested during the operation were released after profiling and signing undertakings, while repeat offenders will face prosecution. The crackdown is part of broader efforts to ensure compliance with state regulations and enhance public safety across Akwa Ibom.
