Hunter shoots colleague dead in Oyo forest

Police authorities in Oyo State have taken a hunter into custody following a fatal shooting incident that claimed the life of his colleague during a hunting expedition.

Hunter Arrested After Forest Shooting

Waheed Rasaki, aged 35, is now in police custody after he reportedly shot and killed his fellow hunter, Femi Oyedepo. The tragic event unfolded inside the Oretan Ijaiye forest, located in the Moniya area under the Akinyele Local Government.

According to police reports, Rasaki walked into the Moniya Police Division to report that he had accidentally discharged his weapon, hitting Oyedepo. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 7. The victim is said to have collapsed immediately and died on the spot.

Police Response and Investigation

Following the report, a team of police operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, swiftly moved to the scene. The body of the deceased was recovered, and the suspect was arrested. The police spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed that Rasaki is currently detained as a full-scale investigation into the circumstances of the shooting has commenced.

The police are working to piece together the exact events that led to the fatal discharge of the hunter's firearm in the forest.

Separate Student Killing in Saki

In a related development from the same day, police in Saki arrested one Olatunji Segun in connection with the killing of a student from Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic, Saki.

Ayanlade explained that officers responded to a distress call concerning a violent clash among students. The altercation took place at the Challenge 1 area, behind the institution. During the fight, a student was shot in the back. He was rushed to a private hospital in Saki but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Police recovered an expended cartridge at the scene. The arrest of Segun followed, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the motive and identify all parties involved in the violent episode.

Commissioner's Assurance to the Public

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Femi Haruna, praised the officers for their prompt response to both incidents. He reassured residents that the police command is dedicated to upholding law and order across the state.

CP Haruna also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities or persons to the nearest police station to help prevent crime.
