Lagos Govt Reacts to Viral Sexual Assault Video, Advises Survivor

Lagos Government Addresses Viral Sexual Assault Allegations in Official Statement

The Lagos state government has formally responded to a widely circulated video in which a Nigerian woman alleges she was sexually assaulted in her apartment while intoxicated and barely conscious. Authorities, through the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, confirmed they have taken note of the viral footage and are actively working to locate the alleged survivor to initiate a proper investigation.

Details of the Alleged Incident and Government Response

In the video, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, the woman claimed the assault occurred on the morning of Sunday, February 15. She stated that the incident took place when most residents in her neighbourhood had gone to church, leaving her without immediate assistance. According to her account, the absence of neighbours meant no one heard her muffled cries or came to her aid during the traumatic event.

The woman further alleged that after the incident, she received a direct message on TikTok from the alleged perpetrator. In this message, the man reportedly admitted to committing the act and attempted to discourage her from pursuing legal action, boasting that he had sufficient financial resources to suppress the case. She claimed the suspect stated he had previously tried to court her on multiple occasions, and although she was receptive to his advances, she allegedly refused to provide her personal contact details.

In the same message, the man reportedly described using a blade to injure her private parts to carry out the assault, claiming he initially encountered difficulty. These disturbing allegations sparked widespread outrage and sympathy online, prompting an official response from Lagos state authorities.

Official Appeal for Cooperation and Public Reaction

Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency issued a statement urging the woman, or anyone with credible information about her whereabouts, to come forward so the matter could be thoroughly investigated. In a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, the agency said it is actively attempting to establish contact with the survivor to provide immediate support, appropriate intervention, and to ascertain her exact location.

The agency also appealed to the public to assist by sending direct messages through its official social media channels if they possess useful information that could aid in the investigation. This move underscores the government's commitment to addressing cases of domestic and sexual violence with urgency and sensitivity.

Meanwhile, public reaction has been mixed, with many Nigerians initially expressing sympathy and calling for justice. However, scepticism has emerged in some quarters, as critics questioned how the woman was able to move about after allegedly sustaining severe injuries. Others raised concerns over her claim of ingesting a toxic substance and still appearing physically healthy in the video.

Some social media users also pointed out perceived similarities between the writing style of the alleged suspect's message and the woman's own posts, fueling speculation about the authenticity of the claims. This division highlights the complexities surrounding viral allegations and the need for thorough verification processes.

The Lagos state government's proactive stance aims to ensure that all allegations are handled with due diligence, providing support to survivors while maintaining investigative integrity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in resolving such sensitive cases.
