Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom is set to join Ipswich Town on a permanent transfer from Ajax, with the move officially taking effect on July 1, 2026. This follows Ipswich Town's successful promotion to the Premier League.
A mandatory clause in Akpom's loan agreement, reportedly valued at £7 million (approximately €8 million), was triggered after Ipswich secured their return to the top flight of English football. The 30-year-old forward has agreed to a three-year contract that will keep him at Portman Road until 2029.
During the 2025/26 season, Akpom made 31 appearances across all competitions while on loan at Ipswich, primarily featuring as an impact substitute. He scored two goals during the campaign, including a crucial strike in a 3-0 victory over Oxford United on New Year's Day and another goal against Hull City.
Ipswich's promotion was confirmed on Saturday, May 2, 2026, following a 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. The result saw Ipswich finish second in the Championship standings with 84 points.
Akpom chose to join Ipswich in August 2025, turning down a permanent offer from Birmingham City in order to pursue his ambition of returning to the Premier League.
Prior to his stint in England, the former Arsenal striker made 68 appearances for Ajax, scoring 23 goals. The permanent acquisition of Akpom is part of Ipswich's broader recruitment strategy for their Premier League return. Reports also indicate that the club is triggering a €2.5 million clause for defender Cedric Kipre from Reims.
