The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to press freedom and the protection of journalists as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. This assurance was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an inter-ministerial press conference in Abuja marking World Press Freedom Day 2026.
Government Pledge
Idris emphasized that a free and responsible press is fundamental to democratic governance, stating that no society can thrive without credible information and accountability. He noted that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to creating an environment where journalists can operate freely and safely.
UN Concern Over Impunity
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed dismay that 85% of crimes committed against journalists worldwide remain uninvestigated and unpunished. In his message, Guterres described this as an unacceptable level of impunity and stressed that press freedom is a key pillar of democracy.
Balancing Security and Freedom
The Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Ajayi, noted that press freedom must be balanced with national security considerations. The event, themed 'Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security', brought together security agencies and media executives to discuss safeguarding journalists ahead of the next election cycle.
