Non-Academic Staff Unions Call Off Strike
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have declared an end to their ongoing nationwide industrial action. The unions have instructed their members to resume work on Monday, May 11, 2026.
This decision was announced by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the two unions through a statement issued to branch leaders. The statement, signed by NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim, explained that the suspension followed a meeting with the federal government's Expanded Renegotiation Committee, led by former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Yayale Ahmed.
According to the unions, the JAC leadership considered the government's appeal to suspend the strike and secured a commitment from the renegotiation committee that all outstanding negotiations, including a revised offer on the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), would be concluded within two weeks of the strike's suspension.
Recall that the unions had embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike on May 1, 2026, to protest the federal government's failure to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements for non-teaching staff and the rejection of a 30 percent salary increase for workers in the sector.
In the statement, the unions urged branch leaders to note the development, appeal to members, and convene congresses to report the suspension, effective from Monday, May 11, 2026, while continuing other engagements with relevant stakeholders.
NASU and SSANU expressed gratitude to their members for complying with the strike directive, describing the nationwide solidarity as encouraging.
