Tosin Adarabioyo Decides International Future: Nigeria or England?
Adarabioyo Makes Decision on Nigeria vs England Future

New updates have emerged regarding Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo's international future as the second international window of 2026 approaches. The 28-year-old has long been eligible to represent both England, by birth, and Nigeria, through his parents, but has not yet committed to either senior national team.

Adarabioyo's International Career So Far

Adarabioyo has not played international football since 2015, when he last featured for England's U19 team in a 5-1 victory over Japan. Despite being a Premier League player for several seasons, he has not earned a senior call-up from the Three Lions. The Manchester City academy graduate has previously expressed a preference for representing England, but a lack of opportunities has left his future uncertain.

Recent Reports on His Decision

According to OwnGoal Nigeria, Adarabioyo has reportedly decided to represent Nigeria and has made himself available for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle in the upcoming June international friendlies. Nigeria is set to face Poland and Portugal, as well as defend their Unity Cup in London. However, conflicting reports from All Nigeria Soccer suggest that the Chelsea defender is not currently thinking about his international future and wishes to enjoy his summer after a challenging season at club level.

Adarabioyo's season at Chelsea has been marred by injuries and limited playing time. Despite the club having three different managers, he featured in only 29 matches across all competitions, starting just 15 and scoring two goals, both in the FA Cup. With Chelsea expected to revamp their squad after a disappointing season, Adarabioyo could be set for a summer exit.

Impact on Super Eagles Squad

Adarabioyo's indecisiveness is unlikely to trouble Eric Chelle, who already has a wealth of options at centre-back. William Troost-Ekong's retirement has opened the door for others, but rising star Benjamin Fredrick, who missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, is back in action and expected to return to the squad. Chelle has also handed opportunities to Trabzonspor's Chibuike Nwaiwu and Rangers' Emmanuel Fernandez. Calvin Bassey, who missed recent matches with a back injury, and Igoh Ogbu are also vying for places in the national team.

Comparison with Michael Olise's Decision

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr previously explained why Michael Olise turned down Nigeria. Rohr and his assistant Tunde Adelakun scouted Olise in 2021 while he was at Reading, but the player rejected the approach. Adarabioyo's situation remains different, as he has not yet made a final commitment.
