Stakeholders within the Youth Wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ketu Zone, Imeko/Afon Local Council of Ogun State, have rejected what they described as a purported “consensus endorsement” of Jemili Adigun Akingbade for a fourth term in the Ogun State House of Assembly, insisting that due process must be followed ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rejection of Consensus Claim
The youth and women wings of the APC in the council rejected the decision of the party leadership to pick Akingbade as the consensus candidate for the Imeko-Afon State Constituency. The aggrieved youths and women, rising from a stakeholders’ meeting yesterday at the local council party secretariat, described the selection of the lawmaker as undemocratic, divisive and contrary to the provisions of the APC Constitution and Electoral Act.
Communique Details
In a communiqué signed by the Chairman, Muyheed Ibrahim, and Secretary, Yunus Fayomi, the stakeholders described the endorsement claim as “misleading and unfounded,” noting that it did not reflect the true position of the zone in the party. The youths and women categorically opposed the backdoor arrangements that produced Akingbade and demanded a credible primary election in which all aspirants are allowed to contest.
They said that the “purported consensus candidate” had not formally engaged with relevant party structures before he was foisted on the constituency. According to the stakeholders, democracy cannot thrive where imposition prevails.
Appeal to Party Leadership
The youths and women, who reaffirmed their loyalty to the APC, appealed to the party leadership at the state and national levels to uphold democratic principles and allow the will of party members, as well as the electorate, to prevail. They, however, urged party members and supporters across Imeko/Afon to remain calm and focused, assuring that a credible aspirant would emerge through a fair and open process.
