Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has broken his silence on the possibility of serving as Peter Obi's running mate in the 2027 presidential election. In a recent interview, Kwankwaso confirmed that he would accept the role if offered by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Kwankwaso Signals Readiness to Work with Obi
Speaking on Arise Television's Prime Time programme, Kwankwaso stated that he would gladly work with Obi if the party decides on a southern candidate and selects him as the vice-presidential nominee. He emphasized that the combination could offer Nigeria stronger leadership.
"If the party decides that I should be the running mate of any candidate from the south under the circumstances, I'd be happy to work together with him," Kwankwaso said.
He further added, "Personally, I cannot remember any better combination, no matter how much time is given to find those who can beat us in terms of doing the right thing for this country."
Leaders Agree to Tackle Insecurity
The former governor also revealed that he and Obi have already reached an understanding on addressing Nigeria's worsening security situation. "Both of us, my humble self and Peter Obi, have agreed to tackle the issue of insecurity head-on to ensure there is peace and stability in this country," he said.
These remarks are expected to intensify discussions around possible opposition coalitions ahead of 2027. Political observers believe that a formal partnership involving Kwankwaso and Obi could significantly reshape calculations for the next presidential contest.
Kwankwaso on Partnership with Atiku
Previously, Kwankwaso dismissed concerns that his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has weakened opposition unity. Speaking on Arise TV on May 11, he suggested that current divisions within the opposition may not be permanent and left room for future collaboration.
