Makinde: PDP Will Defeat Tinubu in 2027 Presidential Election

Governor Seyi Makinde has confidently declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on track to win Nigeria's 2027 presidential election. He made this statement on Monday, May 4, during the 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of a PDP faction held in Abuja.

Makinde Addresses Party Stakeholders

Speaking to party members and stakeholders, Makinde emphasized that the PDP remains capable of reclaiming power at all levels of government. He urged members to stay united as preparations for the next election cycle intensify. "We should write it down. This gathering will produce House of Assembly members, will produce House of Representatives members, will produce Senators, will produce Governors, and will produce the next President," he said.

Caretaker Committee Approved

The meeting also focused on internal party restructuring. Leaders present approved the formation of a 13-member caretaker committee to manage the faction's affairs. Former Minister Tanimu Turaki was appointed chairman, while Taofeek Arapaja was named secretary. The decision followed a motion raised and supported by party officials at the gathering. Other members from different regions were also announced as part of the interim leadership team. This move is part of ongoing efforts within the PDP to reorganize and strengthen its structure ahead of the general elections.

Supreme Court Ruling and Party Crisis

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that some PDP leaders, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo and his Bauchi counterpart Bala Mohammed, along with members of the party's Board of Trustees (BoT) and the factional National Working Committee, held a closed-door meeting in Abuja following the Supreme Court ruling on the party's leadership crisis. The meeting took place at Bauchi House in Asokoro, Abuja, shortly after the Supreme Court ruling on Thursday, April 30. Attendees included BoT members, the national assembly caucus, the NEC, the national caucus, state chairmen, and ex-officio members. Earlier, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara announced that the BoT would take over party affairs until a substantive caretaker committee is formed.

Peter Obi Meets Makinde

In related developments, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi held a closed-door meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde at the Government House in Ibadan. The meeting, which took place behind closed doors, is believed to be connected to ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election. Sources indicate that discussions may center on Obi's future political plans and possible alliances as stakeholders begin early engagements.
