In a decisive political development ahead of the 2027 elections, Mustapha Sule Lamido has emerged as the consensus governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State, further consolidating his place at the centre of the state’s unfolding political realignments.
Adoption Process
The motion for his adoption was moved by Dr. Aminu Taura, former Secretary to the State Government, and seconded by Wada Abubakar Dokaji. The process was formally supervised by the PDP State Chairman, Babandi Ibrahim, who ensured orderly proceedings as party members sealed the decision through a resounding voice vote in a clear demonstration of internal consensus.
Background of the Candidate
Lamido, a businessman, politician, and son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, is no stranger to the frontline of state politics. He was the PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 election, where he mounted a strong challenge in one of the most competitive races in the state. In that election, the APC candidate and incumbent Governor Umar Namadi polled 618,449 votes to retain office. Lamido of the PDP followed with 368,726 votes, while Ibrahim Ringim of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) secured 37,156 votes, reflecting a three-way contest that reshaped Jigawa’s political dynamics.
Despite the outcome, Lamido has remained a central figure within the PDP, sustaining his grassroots network and strengthening his presence in party leadership structures across the state. Widely regarded by supporters as a rising political force and a continuation of an established political legacy, he has consistently framed his agenda around youth empowerment, institutional renewal, and governance reform.
Call for Unity
Speaking after his emergence as consensus candidate, Lamido called for unity and urgent collective action to address what he described as worsening socio-economic conditions in Jigawa State. He urged party members to “do everything humanly possible to protect the interests of the party and the interests of the state,” warning that critical sectors such as education and healthcare were under severe strain. According to him, the PDP must now close ranks and act decisively to “rescue the state from the devastation and catastrophe it has found itself once again,” stressing that only unity, discipline, and sacrifice could reposition the state for progress.
He expressed gratitude to party leaders, elders, and stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him, describing the consensus endorsement as both an honour and a renewed mandate for service. With this development, the PDP in Jigawa appears to be consolidating early around a single standard-bearer, setting the stage for a politically charged and highly strategic journey toward the 2027 governorship election.
