Nine Groups Form Coalition for Participatory Governance

Nine leading civil society and civic technology organisations have formed the Coalition for Participatory Governance (CPG), a collective initiative aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery in Nigeria, beginning at the local government level.

The coalition, convened by TriAfrica Empowerment Foundation and powered by BudgIT and Lagos Island Connect, brings together Africa Leadership Group, the Lagos Civil Society Participation for Development (LACSOP), To Build a Nation (TBAN), Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria, SERAP, the Centre for Fiscal Transparency, and the Nigeria Diaspora Coalition for Change (NDCC) in a coordinated effort to tackle governance challenges affecting citizens’ quality of life.

Approach and Vision

With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections approaching, the CPG is anchored on the belief that participatory governance—where citizens are active stakeholders, not just voters—is critical to sustainable nation-building. The coalition plans to drive this vision through community empowerment, capacity-building at the local government level, and strategic engagement with stakeholders across national, state, and local tiers.

Inaugural Town Hall Meeting

As part of its rollout, the coalition will hold its inaugural town hall meeting on Thursday, May 7, 2026. The event is expected to formally introduce the CPG, outline its governance agenda, and create a platform for dialogue among community members, government representatives, and civil society actors on key accountability issues, particularly those affecting Lagos Island and the wider Nigerian society.

One of its immediate priorities is a pilot project on Lagos Island, being implemented in collaboration with BudgIT, Lagos Island Connect, and EiE Nigeria. The initiative will test innovative tools and approaches designed to improve citizen engagement and strengthen accountability in local governance.

Statement from Founding Partners

“This coalition is not just another alliance of organisations,” the founding partners said in a joint statement. “It is a deliberate and structured effort to ensure that those most affected by governance failures—ordinary Nigerians in their communities—are equipped with the knowledge, tools, and collective voice needed to demand and sustain meaningful change.”

The coalition has invited members of the public, media, community leaders, and government officials to attend the town hall meeting on May 7.
